Holly's Week Away
Hey, you moms out there! Ever had the opportunity to get away for a week – ALONE? I had the opportunity to do just that last week - October 13 through October 20. Mitchel and I used to own a time-share. We sold it in 1997 but had banked a week (we didn’t use it one year and saved the week for another year). We assumed we had lost that saved week when we sold the time-share. Well early in 1999 I got to thinking about that week. I called RCI and asked them if that week was still available. Amazingly enough it was available until November of 1999. We immediately planned our family vacation to St. Augustine. You can read about it in our archives. While we were there we won the grand prize at the resort’s raffles which was a Bonus Week. Mitchel wasn’t able to get away for the bonus week so I had a girls’ week away. Stephen stayed with Martha and David Gibbs (Mitchel’s parents) and Mitchel stayed at home.

I drove to Boone, NC on Friday October 13. I arrived around 4:30 PM and I wasn’t sure what to do with myself. I figured it out real quick. I was all alone! I had checked out a lot of books from the library so I enjoyed all this free time reading. Saturday I went grocery shopping and that was it. Sunday I went to church and that was it! The rest of the time I read! How wonderful it was! I took a walk on Sunday and barely made it up the mountain. I’ll blame it on the pregnancy instead of the shape I’m in.

On Monday, Erin, one of my roommates from college joined me around 2:30 PM. We drove around a little, went to an old store that didn’t have authentic merchandise from a hundred years ago but I believe the building was authentic. We went home and enjoyed a quiet evening just talking and catching up.

On Tuesday our other roommate, Aimee, arrived around lunchtime. We had lunch in and then went sightseeing. We visited Grandfather Mountain and walked out on the mile high "swinging bridge". It’s not as bad as it sounds. There was a small zoo there. The foliage was changing colors and I heard someone say that this was the best week to be up there. By the end of the week the leaves were falling like rain. That evening we spent a lot of time talking – it was wonderful!

On Wednesday we went to Mystery Hill. A house where water appears to run up hill and balls roll up hill. There was a swing where you could only swing backward, not forward. Very interesting. We got pictures and laughed so hard – we probably hadn’t laughed that hard since college. Aimee had to work the next day so she left around 2:30 that afternoon.

On Thursday Erin left in the morning around 9:30. I debated on leaving also. I thought I would be lonely now that everyone was gone. But I decided I’m not going to have another opportunity to do this again for a long time. Especially with the baby coming. So I stayed and didn’t do a thing all day. Throughout the week I would turn the television on but never found anything interesting to watch. Makes me feel better about not having TV.

Friday, as I was gathering the rest of my things from up in the loft where my bedroom was, I fell down the stairs on my back and scraped my arms on the carpet. Nothing was broken, thankfully. As I was carrying something out to the car the screen door slammed on my ankle. My first thought was I should have left yesterday. Then my mom said that no, it was a good thing to stay but I also knew that now it was time to leave.

I had a wonderful time. But it’s great to be home. I missed my guys a lot! Now my time will be spent preparing for our new baby. We need to get the computer room cleaned out, the border taken down, the bedroom equipment moved out and the room painted. We also need to find a crib and dresser and, well I’m not going to think about that right now. I’m going to remember my wonderful vacation and be glad that I had the opportunity to do that alone. But what makes it all worthwhile is to know that I still looked forward to coming home. I now know for myself the true meaning of "home is where the heart is." And my heart is definitely with my family.
